Could SPACE SUITS be the key to beating the polar vortex? The winter coat that is toasty enough to keep astronauts warm

With the East Coast locked in yet another polar vortex, the launch of a new space suit-inspired winter jacket could not be more welcome.

Betabrand’s $265 Space Jacket uses the warming technology from astronaut suits to create a lightweight, but effective coat.

The zip-up quilted style takes its visual cues from space suits as well. It is constructed of white Tyvek and features a snug helmet-like hood and assorted Velcro-on NASA-inspired badges.

The jacket is lined with silvered nylon taffeta to reflect body heat, mimicking the way that space craft foils are used to insulate equipment and cabin areas.

It was designed for men, but comes in extra-small sizing – making it a viable option for women as well.

The jacket’s designer, Steven Wheeler, explains: ‘There are other “replica” flight jackets made for space enthusiasts, but I decided to come up with something boldly different, yet also completely wearable and well-suited for space.’

He says that he ‘wanted it to embody everything I loved about the space program, and to eventually serve as an actual flight jacket for present-day astronauts on missions to the ISS (International Space Station).’

The jacket has so far gathered 175per cent of the funding needed to make it a sellable item, meaning that the Space Jackets will officially begin shipping to consumers this May.

Betabrand was founded in 2010 in San Francisco with the intention to offer millennial-approved clothing.

They have previously turned out meme-inspiring inventions like the ‘executive hoodie’ - zip-up sweatshirts made in various suit materials like pinstripes, and yoga pants suitable for office wear.
